What’s being said?
You say you want a revolution...
Don’t get me wrong, I love art by dead artists as much as art by the living. It’s refreshing, however, to stroll into a world of creation not filled with spoils-of-war artworks gathered by colonialists and missionaries. In The Lennonist Party, Carolina Echeverria’s new exhibition at Galerie Richelieu, the paint is so fresh, so alive, that it looks as though it were applied yesterday – vibrant, intense red, ochre, orange, and yellow. Echeverria’s brush-strokes invigorate a sense of dawn and truth.

There's also a playful side to "hemming" that we didn't want to skirt; hence, "Stories Between the Stitches" threads its way through the role clothing plays in containment and construction of the self. Poets Shirley Serviss, Hannah Main-van der Kamp and Donna McCaw tease out the implications of what we wear and why. Susan McCaslin and Carol Schlueter conjure the mystical side. And Carolina Echeverria's "Conversion Gown," from her sculpture series of Survival Dresses, displays religious tensions with fashionable wit. Susan L. Scott - Co-Editor Vox Feminarum © 1998-1999
